History of Banking in India.

The Banking system in India was started in 18th century. Bank of Hindustan was among the first bank in India. Going ahead, State Bank of India is the oldest existing bank in the country. In 1806, it was originated as Bank of Calcutta and was later named Bank of Bengal in 1809. It was among the three banks funded by a presidency government all of which were merged in 1921 to form Imperial Bank of India.

After India’s independence, the Imperial Bank of India was renamed as State Bank of India in 1955. Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is India’s central bank which controls the monetary policy of the Indian Rupee. It plays an important part in the Development Strategy of Government of India. The central bank vary from country to country which are autonomous body and RBI is known as Banker’s Bank.

Earlier, the The concept of banking was started in 14th century in Italy and credit and lending concept is taken from there. India initiated this concept in 18th century. The name ‘Bank’ is taken from middle French ‘Banque’ which means ‘Table’. This was the word used as benches were used to makeshift and exchange counters. The transactions used to happen on desks by green tablecloth. This is how the name, ‘Bank’ was kept.

Classification of Banks.

Banks are classified in scheduled and non-scheduled banks. Scheduled banks can be classified into commercial banks and cooperative banks. Further more, Commercial Banks can be classified into public sector banks, private sector banks and cooperative banks.
